Food and Nightlife Recommendations
Tony's Pizza Napoletana - 1570 Stockton St @ Union St, (415) 835-9888: Probably the most common answer given for “best pizza in the city”, this restaurant is owned by World Pizza Championship winner Tony Gemignani. There is often a long wait here, so leave your phone number with the host and head to a nearby bar for a drink. $$$
Capo's - 641 Vallejo St @ Columbus Ave, (415) 986-8998: Same owner/chef as above, they offer 5 different types of crust: Deep Dish, Cast Iron Pan, Stuffed, Cracker Thin, and their championship winning Quattro Forni, a pizza cooked four different times. $$$
Sotto Mare - 552 Green St @ Columbus Ave: Quirky, narrow, and not fancy, but very popular, this place only cares about serving amazing seafood. It’s the place to go for SF’s famous seafood soup creation, cioppino. $$
Café Jacqueline - 1454 Grant St @ Union St, (415) 981-5565: All main courses and desserts are soufflés in this candlelit restaurant. Each cheesy dish serves 2, desserts must be ordered with dinner, you want one! $$$
Golden Boy Pizza - 542 Green St @ Columbus Ave, (415) 982-9738: A divey but character-filled purveyor of pizza by the slice, their crust is focaccia dough from Liguria Bakery (an SF institution since 1911, all they do is sell focaccia). It’s unique, delicious and they sell beer and wine! $
Tamarind Hall - 1268 Grant Ave @ Vallejo St, (415) 872-9980: High quality Thai cuisine with a fun bar atmosphere in the heart of North Beach’s nightlife district. $$
Beer & Bars
Noc Noc - 515 Broadway @ Kearny, (415) 994-2806: Beer loving owners and dozens of good beers on tap in a trippy setting.
Belle Cora - 565 Green St @ Columbus Ave, (415) 872-5451: Good wine and beer, plus sidewalk seating beneath willow trees. Great spot to wait for your dinner reservation.
Church Key - 1402 Grant Ave @ Green St, (415) 986-3511: Small bar, great beer.
La Trappe - 800 Greenwich St @ Columbus Ave, (415) 440-8727: Small restaurant with large Belgian-focused beer list, cozy bar down stairs. Open @ 6pm Tu-We, 5pm Th-Sa.
Grant and Green: Within a block of this intersection are many bars with a tendency to get rowdy. Among them are Maggie McGarry’s and Tupelo, which often have fun live music, Tope Lounge for cocktails, and Church Key (above).
Stella Pastry - 446 Columbus: Possibly the best tiramisu of your life. Closes at 8pm. $
Victoria Pastry - 700 Filbert: Tony Gemignani’s choice for canoli. Closes at 8pm. $
